Three Male Houseguests, One Quasi Single Bachelorette

As if it’s not enough to be dating three guys simultaneously, my parents have been hosting three (male) activists here at Casa Richter for the past week.  They hail from an organization called A Ride to the End, a collective of veterans and artists who are riding their bicycles around the U.S. to raise awareness about the situations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and frankly, they’re fantastic.

It’s been a while since I’ve done anything even remotely political.  I used to be fairly active with CodePink and ANSWER and I even palled around with some Veterans for Peace folks and the Quaker lobbying organization, Friends Committee on National Legislation, back in the day, but what can I say?  I went to my first anti-war protest during my senior year of high school; I never thought the war would last until my senior year of college, let alone beyond grad school.

Admittedly, I got a bit disillusioned along the way.  The fact that October will mark the tenth anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan boggles my mind, especially as most Americans are still too hyped up on the tenth anniversary of 9/11 to acknowledge the fact that there’s an equally grave (if not graver) ten-year mark just around the corner.

Thankfully, the Ride to the End fellas are a bit more active in their activism than Yours Truly so obviously I find them intriguing… and rather attractive, despite the fact that they’ve been riding around the country for the past several months without regular access to washing machines and other necessities of modern courtship.

They arrived last Thursday, just in time to find me zipping into my Carlos Santana heels on my way to meet The Wedding Date in Old City.  The next morning, their leader made the mistake of eating breakfast around the same time I was helping myself to coffee, thereby inadvertently subjecting himself to a lengthy discussion about the pros and cons of dating people with “complicated” personal lives.

Lord knows that they think of me—especially after Date #7 called last night to express his outrage discomfort over the fact that I’m seeing two other people.  (Moron that I am, I didn’t think to take my cell phone up to my bedroom until they’d already overheard a third of our conversation.)

But boys will be boys, and they’ve proposed a triple date for this afternoon.

(This, by the way, is a new record: a quadruple header!)

I’m vaguely horrified by my own… sociability, but I’m not going to sleep with any of them, and they’re activists!  It’s for a good cause.  Plus, Date #6 still has a good twelve hours to read this entry, decide I’m completely insane and call to cancel our dinner date.

(Here’s hoping he doesn’t.)

PS: I never post pictures of my dates but if you were to head on over to http://www.operationawareness.org/ and check out the amazing work they’re doing in the name of peace, dialogue and healing, you might possibly find a few photos of several very good lookin’ men.  Just sayin’…

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this post of course. I think they guys are cute too, and I’m a dinosaur, but more importantly they are doing great work, yes this is a plug for them…talking about how the people of Afghanistan are working on the DL to make things better ON THEIR OWN, showing us there is another way and using “hillbilly” logic, song and storytelling to do so. I’ll miss them when they leave, they’re the best group we’ve hosted so far!

This is a great post. Those guys are so nice. I just asked your mom the other night how you were enjoying having them at your house.
