You Can Never Have Enough Chocolate Covered Strawberries
This is what The Wedding Date got me for Valentine’s Day:
This is what I got (or rather made) for him:
Great minds think alike, I guess.
Thankfully I work almost exclusively with women and women like chocolate so we’ve all been enjoying the overabundance of chocolate covered strawberries.
And now, getting back to the point of today’s post, we’re on our way to dinner when The Wedding Date turns to me and asks, “Am I costing you your readers?”
“My readers?”
“Yeah, it seems like people don’t comment on your blog as much when you’re writing about—you know—happy stuff.”
It’s true.
Even my friend Date #6 has stopped reading (“Who wants to read about normality?”) and it seeing as The Wedding Date reads my blog and all of the associated comments every day, he’s picked up on the fact that no one likes reading about relationships that are going… well, well.
“Yes,” I reply, after a bit of consideration, “you are. But I don’t care. I mean I do care—I’ve put a lot of work into my blog—but I don’t care enough to stop seeing you simply because drama makes for better reading.”
(This, by the way, is HUGE for me. A few years ago—even a few months ago—I don’t think I would have come to the same conclusion.)
But the fact remains that good stories are built on conflict and The Wedding Date and I are still in the honeymoon phase of our relationship which we means we never argue, we never fight and we never even get angry at each other. In fact, sometimes we entertain ourselves by trying to predict the things we’ll eventually fight about.
(I’m betting on our varied interpretations of what constitutes a “clean” living space.)
I’ve cried a total of three times in front of The Wedding Date but none of them have been exciting cries. The first time was the weekend that a certain someone showed up on my doorstep—those were freaked-the-f*ck-out tears—but ever since, it’s been nothing but happy tears. And who the hell wants to read about that?
Not me.
In fact, I don’t even want to write about that. Which is why I’m going to be implementing some changes. I hope you like them, but if you don’t, rest assured: I’m going to publish a book on all of this someday so you’ll have all the drama you could ever want at your fingertips.
In the meantime, Happy Valentine’s Day, folks! I hope its full of chocolate or flowers or chocolate made to to look like flowers, and not drama 🙂

They look yum! Cute you both got the same for each other. Happy Valentine’s!
Chocolate covered strawberries…. Definitely the best gift ever 🙂
And just because we aren’t commenting, doesn’t mean we’re not here! I read it on my RSS feed on my phone, so commenting is a pain. But i read everyday and, personally, I LOVE seeing the happy stuff. Yes, drama makes for more… Exciting reading, but that doesn’t mean this stuff is any less interesting 🙂
I’m with Kara. I read every day, but the last few weeks I’ve been reading on my phone instead of my computer. Also, you’ll take note, I frequently comment first – YAY me! – but lately haven’t gotten to read your blog until several others have commented already – booo not-first-status 😦
Anyway, happy stuff, sad stuff, nothing-stuff… doesn’t matter, I enjoy it, as long as it’s well written, and your “stuff” always is.
OK so I’m a regular reader who doesn’t usually comment. I planned on commenting just by reading the title of today’s post and I just wanted to confirm that no girl can have enough chocolate covered strawberries. Actually that’s precisely what I want for Valentine’s Day. 🙂
P.S. Hi Wedding Date. I know you must be reading this according to Kat. And I’ll still keep reading Kat’s blog even if there’s no drama…and from a lady, its your job to keep it that way. 🙂 jk…sort of.
Happy V-Day to you both.
Thanks, Nicole– and I do hope you get your strawberries!
pshhhh i read everyday and love seeing you happy!!
today I have checked* almost all of the chocolates that I bought for Hugh for Valentines day, just to make sure they were OK.
this is how your valentines day could look in 3 years time…!
* read “eaten”
Hahahah! That’s why I didn’t allow myself to make TWD’s until just an hour before his arrival 🙂
Personally, reading about young love makes me just as happy, if not more so, than reading about young angst. Your WD novio is adorable, sweet, and considerate (surprisingly Austen-esque). I happen think that you are both very lucky folks to have found each other. Has it yet occurred to you that you didn’t need your grand Match.com experiment to find this dashing fellow? All you needed was your clever mom to check out a guy who was checking you out, and point you in the right direction. I love your family!
I’m not your target demo, but to tell the truth I really miss the tales from the Shop era. Perhaps you should try another career in Retail?
Don’t tempt me– I have actually considered it, especially because with all of the student showcases, competitions and recitals coming up, it’s crunch time and my teenagers are being even more teenagery than usual…
But teenagers are still way better that Stupid Sallys 🙂
Happy Valentine’s Day and your guys’ chocolate covered strawberries look absolutely delish! I love that he got you a little bouquet of strawberries too, those look so cute … and yummy.
Happy Valentine’s Day! I’m still here because you have the ability to make things and people interesting and enjoyable to read – a sign of a great writer. I don’t comment a lot on the posts with the WD because I don’t want to be a couple stalker. But I often smile and think, “good for Kat!”
Happy blogs are just fine. As long as the humour does not go. You do it so well. I hope the pair of you have a great day.
I still enjoy reading your blog – you do a great job keeping things funny and interesting despite, you know, not being angst-ridden.
And, thought you might like this mcsweeney’s piece if you haven’t seen it already. seems fitting! http://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/daters-index
Don’t worry, we’re still reading! It’s like a small little romance novella every day and since I’ve been following your story for awhile (and hence I’m invested in the characters) I love reading about the happy stuff, too! Keep on it 🙂
Personally, I think you should just start making things up. 🙂
LOVE THIS!
Never ever choose anonymous readers over real love! It’ll never be worth it 🙂 The Great Date experiment has run its course: the results are in. You’ll never stop writing. Your readers won’t have it. You can write about anything and hook me in.
Tell the Wedding Date that just because people aren’t posting doesn’t mean we aren’t reading. I, for one, am very happy that our favorite blogger is happy. I am hoping that you will both continue to be. Perhaps the Wedding Date should offer a few entries himself. I was never able to see the Good Morning America clip so I missed that trauma, but I like seeing how you, too, are moving forward. You don’t need to fight to have a relationship!!
