Independence of a Different Sort

Despite having spent yesterday listing the reasons why America should not have declared its independence from Great Britain, I think it’s time for this particular American to do just that. Shall I explain? As many of you know, I’ve spent several years in the UK— formative years, adult years, years during which I drank more than I ever had before, danced more than I ever had before, dated more than I ever had before (at least until the launch of my “experiment”) and generally fell in love with all things British. (Except for the food; I still don’t get the fascination with fish-n-chips or mushy peas but perhaps they’re an acquired taste.) Nonetheless, I’ve been back in Philadelphia for nineteen months now.  A full year and a half—and until yesterday I was still carrying around my NHS card, my Wandsworth Library card, my Café Nero Loyalty Card and my T-Mobile pay-as-you-go top-up card.  The mobile phone belonging to said card was in the top drawer of my desk, along with my passport, my US/UK electric …
